Edith Palmer - champion cyclist
Posted: Tuesday 18th August 2020
Edith Palmer was a regular sprint cyclist at Herne Hill. Below are photos of her racing on the Claud Butler bike he built for her. All the rest of her racing photos were lost in the bombing of WWII, even the newspaper ones. At the bottom of the page is a photograph of some of her prizes.
My father, Henry Gleeson raced too, only he wasn’t as successful. Both were both amateurs, although my mother did turn professional for a short while but quit when she was asked to lose a race. It didn’t sit well with her principles. I also saw her on a couple of Pathe newsreels in the past. They both belonged to a club I believe was called the Merton Wheelers.
