At the age of 25 years E W Higgins, another of the Manchester stars of the track, had beaten many of the world’s top sprinters. Amongst his wins was the 1000-yards British Empire Championships held at his home track, Fallowfield.
In 1931 he represented Great Britain at the World Championships in Copenhagen and recorded the fastest 220 yards time of the event. This was a good year for him as he went on to win both the London and Derby Grand Prix events. He went on to represent his country in the World’s in 1932/34/35.
At the Manchester Club Athletic Ground he won countless sprints against national and international riders. As a fellow clubmate of Fred Pemberton he rode a Pemberton Arrow track machine for many years.
