Sheffield Langsett Path - 1955

The name over the shop door was ‘Langsett Cycles’ 182-4-6-8-190-192 Infirmary Road, Sheffield 6, works at Green Lane Sheffield 2. A lot of the models were just named Langsett. There was a famous 90 mile road race called ‘The Langsett Road Race’ started in 1951 and actually started in front of the shop shop. Independents and amateurs under BLRC rules. Famous winners were R Johnson, J Pottier, R J Maitland, A Isley, G Vines, T Hallam, and R Coe. This was run on a tough circuit in Derbyshire leaving Sheffield into Langsett. 1st Prize Trophy and 8 Pounds prize money a week’s wages in 1951) and 1st Amateur Simplex JUY – 51 Gear. The 1957 Ovaltine / Langsett Cycles team in that year’s race was: P Ryals, G Shaw, A Hoyland, D Orford, B Trippett and J Bennett. Owned by W A Smith & E A Smith. Mr Smith was President of The Sheffield Phoenix Cycle Club until he passed away a few years ago. I am still am member of that club.
