Extra details | Freuler geometry (extended head and seat tube) In response to suggestions that larger Colnago frames were not stiff enough, Colnago produced various crimped-tube (Gilco) frames which became their top of the range steel frames, beginning with the Master. Later the Master-Light, Master Olympic and Master Pui. The designation, 'Olympic' was dropped as it contravened the copyright on that name held by the Olympic Committee. Master Extra-light was produced from 2000–2004, then dropped for 2005, and returned in 2006. It was re-introduced due to customer demand for an all-steel frame. So far I have not been able to find a time-line for the Master series frame numbers. Art Decor The Master frameset is individually painted by airbrush artists, and Art Decor was born. It is said that it takes a whole day to paint an Art Decor frame and Colnago estimate the cost at £300. Colour code - AD10? |
From Steel Vintage Bikes (Berlin), more information on The Master
The Colnago Master model line is undoubtedly an evergreen of cycling history. First released in 1983, five different versions of the Colnago Master were manufactured until 1998 (the Master 1983, Master Più 1988, Master Olympic 1991, Master Light 1994 and Master X-Light 1998).
Thanks to this superb frame, the Italian brand achieved the peak of steel frame design, but on the other hand, the Master also represents the end of the steel era in the bicycle industry.
Released in 1991, the Master Olympic shares with its predecessors the famous crimped tubing, designed by Gilberto Colombo to make the frame stiffer and more reactive. Yet it is slightly oversized to add more stiffness. The Olympic also distinguished itself for very eye-catching paint schemes, especially the famous Decor pattern.
(I had heard that Colnago had to drop the name Olympic due to pressure from the Olympic Committe which is very insistant on its property rights of the Olympic name. PU)
