Rotrax Badges, the Mk1 (left)
was fitted to the top model, i.e. the Super Course, until the Concours
was introduced in 1951, from then this model used the Mk1 and the
lesser models used the Mk2 (centre). Also included the Kingston headbadge (right),
the sister ship of Rotrax, these cycles were produced by Mike
Compton, who was the top Rotrax frame builder. This was after Rotrax
sort of sold there business to Witcomb Cycles of London.

Alan Hughes describes
Viking badges: The one on the left was used on all models, except the
very earliest which had a transfer, up to 1957/58.
It was superseded by the other two - the right-hand one was used on the
Severn Valley, the gold oval one on everything else. There are
two versions of this badge, the first being the Severn Valley badge
placed on a gold ground, the second being a slight redesign with the
words "Made in England" moved to the gold oval, as per your picture.
Of course being the British cycle industry there are exceptions.
When I used to haunt Claud Chrimes' shop in Chester about 1960 I saw
several small-framed Hostellers with the "Severn Valley" badge (and one
with a transfer): I saw a lady at Ripley a couple of years back
carrying a ladies' Hosteller with a long head tube & the SV badge,
and on today's Hereford Section ride there was yet another Hosteller
with the same SV badge.
Also, if you sent a frame back to Vikings for refurbishment, there was
a good chance it would come back with the wrong badge, as with my '50
Severn Valley redone in 1962 which has the gold oval.
